"As I come to the end of my first year working as a Safety Assurance Engineer at Occam Group, I thought it would be useful reflect on my time here to provide some insight into the experience I’ve gained and my professional growth over the last 12 months.
This recount maybe helpful to those starting out on a career in engineering and are perhaps hesitant to stray away from well-established graduate schemes. This may be due to nerves surrounding the potential depth of experiences available to you, worries about not having a big name to bolster your CV or concerns about perceived added pressure from working so close to company directors. Obviously, I can’t speak for everyone in a similar position to myself, but my experience is that a small, quality-driven outfit such as Occam Group has the potential to deliver a wide range of experiences to aid your journey to chartership, whilst giving a high-level of support that you maybe wouldn’t expect to see from a larger scheme.
After submitting my cover letter and CV on Gradcracker for the graduate role at Occam Group, I received an invite for an online interview within a matter of days explaining the process, what to expect and how to prepare. This organised approach and calm atmosphere was adopted throughout the interview process with day schedules and travel expenses dealt with quickly, really setting the tone for the company culture and ethos.
I had my first day in mid-July, very shortly after receiving my exam results. Having done a few placements at bigger companies, I was used to starting out being a slow process with fair bit of ‘faff’ and bouncing around various departments/tasks. However, this was not the case at Occam Group. Charles and Nick presented me with all necessary equipment, logins and background info, and took me through a brief but efficient induction. Thanks to the seamless start, I was able to get going on my first proper task within the day, authoring a Safety Management Plan to coordinate the production of a collection of equipment safety cases. Although daunting at first, the task ended being very rewarding with guidance and support being clear and enthusiastically delivered.
Since then, I’ve been fortunate enough to work on a vast range of projects in the civil maritime and defence industries with experience in safety management, technical advice, independent audit support and developing new regulatory artefacts. This has given me a depth of technical knowledge and confidence in industries I may not have given a second thought to during university, as well as seeing significant development of a set of soft skills considered very favourable for most customer facing roles. I’ve been able to be proud of the outputs I’ve provided to customers, expand my network with valuable contacts, and add tangible value to projects rather than just feeling like a tiny piece of a massive puzzle.
Thank you to the team for an incredibly valuable and rewarding first year at Occam Group!"
